Diamonds and Cigarettes

I know many people view themselves with black and white thinking.  That is, they see oneself as either entirely good or entirely bad. There are examples of people in history that are viewed as essentially all good or bad, but most of us fall somewhere in the middle.

The lyrics from “Diamonds and Cigarettes” is a good metaphor to illustrate that we all possess the human quality to adapt, grow, and change.  At times, we make choices that seem more like the unhealthy smoke that lingers after a lit cigarette. Yet, other times, our good qualities illuminate like the brilliance of a diamond.

For some, self-acceptance has remained a persistent challenge over decades.  Some decide to enter therapy, ultimately, with the objective to reduce unwanted negative self-appraisal.  Negative and unrealistic thoughts accumulate over time weighing us down, and can become highly bothersome, repetitive, and limiting.

Therapy can help by learning:

·        Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies to Change Persistent Thinking

·        Journaling to Track Unhelpful Thinking

·        Ways to Adopt Balanced Self-Awareness

·        Assertive Communication
